Appraisal seal - Kanzouin

Japanese: 鑑蔵印 - かんぞういん

A seal is a seal that a collector presses on a painting or calligraphy to show that the painting has been examined and stored. This has been done since ancient times in China, and after the Tang Dynasty, when painters were appointed to the imperial court, the emperor's seal was used to mark the painting as a collector, and this spread to individuals as well. In Japan, the most famous works are Yoshiakira Ashikaga's Seizan and Yoshimitsu's Tenzan. The collector's seal can also be used to estimate the date of production and where the painting came from.
