…The last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah II continued to exist in name only, but some of the remaining princely states, such as Satara and Jhansi, were annexed under the “forfeiting policy” that “if the king had no legitimate children, he would not be allowed to adopt them, and the kingdom would be annexed by the East India Company.” The kingdom of Oudh, home to many sepahis and with a young king, was unreasonably annexed for “mismanagement,” which enraged the sepahis. The sepahis’ numbers had swelled since they had been used by the East India Company in the Battle of Plassey, and were said to have numbered 200,000 just before the rebellion, but the need for them was decreasing with the end of the conquest process. …
