A former town in Higashiibaraki County, located in central Ibaraki Prefecture, west of Mito City. It produces rice, vegetables, and fruit, and also raises silkworms and engages in horticulture. Formerly the Uchihara Training Center was located here, and currently there are facilities such as the International Agricultural Training Center and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Agricultural Technology Training Center. 茨城県中部，水戸市西隣の東茨城郡の旧町。米，野菜，果樹を産し，養蚕，園芸も行う。かつて内原訓練所があり，現在も国際農業研修センター，農林水産省農業技術研修館などの施設がある。常磐線が通じる。2005年２月水戸市へ編入。41.55km2。１万5037人（2003）。
