A former town in Higashiibaraki County, located in central Ibaraki Prefecture, west of Mito City. It produces rice, vegetables, and fruit, and also raises silkworms and engages in horticulture. Formerly the Uchihara Training Center was located here, and currently there are facilities such as the International Agricultural Training Center and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Agricultural Technology Training Center.
