Komesuki - Rice grass

Japanese:
Komesuki - Rice grass

A perennial grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). The rhizome is short, and the culms grow in clumps to form large plants, 20-60 cm tall. The leaves are thread-like, with ligules about 2 mm long. In July and August, the culms bear panicles with sparse spikelets. The spikelets are pale purple, with 2-4 florets, and the glumes are large and uniform in shape, enveloping the glumes. The glumes are rounded on the back, slightly flat at the top with a few teeth, and the midvein becomes a thin awn near the base of the back. The base (the nodule at the base of the spikelet) has a tuft of hairs. It grows on rocky subalpine and alpine areas in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is also widely scattered in alpine areas in the Northern Hemisphere, South America, and Africa. The name means small silver grass, as the shape of the spikelet resembles silver grass. Deschampsia cespitosa (L.) Beauv. has wider leaves than Deschampsia cespitosa, with ligules measuring 3-7 mm, but its distribution is the same as Deschampsia cespitosa. Deschampsia cespitosa was previously included in the Deschampsia genus, but was separated as a separate species.
