Tosca - Tosca (English spelling)

An opera by Italian composer Puccini. Three acts. First performed in Rome in 1900. Based on the play of the same name (first performed in Paris in 1887) written by Victorien Sardou for the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, Luigi Illica (1857-1919) and Giuseppe Giacosa wrote the Italian libretto. Set in Rome in 1800, Scarpia, the police chief who is in love with the diva Tosca, arrests her lover, the painter Cavaradossi, for aiding the revolutionaries, and tries to take her for himself in exchange for his life being spared. Dismayed, Tosca stabs Scarpia to death after obtaining his life and permission to leave the country, but contrary to the promise, Cavaradossi is shot to death, and Tosca follows him and throws herself off the city walls, resulting in a tragic end. The political overtones of the original work have been toned down, and the opera brings to the forefront a drama of human desire and jealousy. The music, which depicts scenes of torture, murder, and execution in a naturalistic way, contrasts beautifully with lyrical arias such as Tosca's "Viva la sang, viva vie" and Cavaradossi's "The stars shine", resulting in a music drama of deep expression. It can be said that this is the work in which the influence of Wagner is most clearly evident. The Japanese premiere was by a Russian opera company that visited Japan in 1919 (Taisho 8), and the Japanese premiere was by the Fujiwara Opera Company in 1935 (Showa 10).

イタリアの作曲家プッチーニのオペラ。三幕。1900年ローマ初演。ビクトリアン・サルドゥーが名女優サラ・ベルナールのために書いた同名の戯曲（1887・パリ初演）に基づき、ルイージ・イリッカLuigi Illica（1857―1919）とジュゼッペ・ジャコーザがイタリア語台本を作成した。1800年のローマを舞台に、歌姫トスカに横恋慕する警察長官スカルピアが、彼女の恋人、画家カバラドッシを革命派に加担したかどで捕らえ、彼の助命と引き換えに彼女をわがものにしようとする。思い余ったトスカは助命と出国許可を手に入れたのちスカルピアを刺殺してしまうが、約束とは違ってカバラドッシは銃殺され、トスカも後を追って城壁から身を投げるという悲劇。原作の政治的な色彩は薄れ、オペラでは人間の欲望や嫉妬(しっと)のドラマが前面に押し出されている。拷問、殺人、処刑といった場面を自然主義的に描写する音楽と、トスカの「歌に生き、恋に生き」やカバラドッシの「星も光りぬ」のような叙情的アリアがみごとな対照をなし、彫りの深い表現の楽劇となっている。ワーグナーの影響がもっとも顕著な形で表れた作品といえよう。日本初演は1919年（大正8）に来日のロシア歌劇団、邦人による初演は1935年（昭和10）の藤原歌劇団。
