Subsonic flow is a high-speed airflow in which the flow speed is everywhere slower than the speed of sound. In this case, the Mach number M , which is the ratio of the flow speed to the speed of sound, is everywhere < 1. The properties of subsonic flow are not qualitatively very different from those of incompressible fluid flow (corresponding to M = 0), but as the value of M increases, the quantitative differences due to changes in gas density become greater. 高速気流のうち,流れの速さがいたるところで音速よりも小さい流れをいう。この場合,流速と音速の比であるマッハ数 M の値は,いたるところで M<1 となる。亜音速流の性質は,定性的には非圧縮性流体の流れ ( M=0 に相当する) とあまり変らず,ただ M の値が増すとともに,気体の密度変化に伴う量的な相違が大きくなる。
