Subsonic flow is a high-speed airflow in which the flow speed is everywhere slower than the speed of sound. In this case, the Mach number M , which is the ratio of the flow speed to the speed of sound, is everywhere < 1. The properties of subsonic flow are not qualitatively very different from those of incompressible fluid flow (corresponding to M = 0), but as the value of M increases, the quantitative differences due to changes in gas density become greater.
