[Died] March 8, 2014. Brussels. Artistic director and administrator of the Belgian Opera. Studied at Ghent University. After serving as assistant music director under Christoph von Dohnanyi at the Frankfurt Opera and Rolf Liebermann at the Paris Opera, he was appointed director of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels in 1981, a position he held until 1991. He subsequently served as general director of the Salzburg Festival from 1991 to 2001, director of the Paris Opera from 2004 to 2009, and director of the Teatro Real in Spain from 2008 to 2013, and staged avant-garde operas at each theater. In addition to adding innovative direction to traditional operas, he caused controversy by staging commissioned works such as John Adams' Death of Klinghoffer (1991) and Philip Glass's The Perfect American (2013). Her last stage work was the opera Brokeback Mountain, based on the novel by Annie Proulx, which premiered in January 2014.

Mortillet, (Louis-Laurent-Marie) Gabriel de

Born: August 29, 1821, near Grenoble
Died: September 25, 1898. Saint-Germain. French archaeologist. Known for being the first to propose a division of prehistoric periods, particularly the subdivision of the Paleolithic period. In 1864 he became director of the Museum of Ancy, and in 1868 a curator at the Saint-Germain Museum of Archaeology, where he served as vice councillor for 17 years. From 1876 he was a professor at the Institute of Anthropology for the rest of his life. During this time he also served as mayor of Saint-Germain in 1885 and as a member of parliament. His main works were Musée préhistorique (Prehistory Museum) (1881) and Le préhistorique: antiquité de l'homme (The Prehistory of Man) (83).

フランスの考古学者。先史時代の時代区分を初めて提唱したことで知られ，特に旧石器時代の細分を行なった。 1864年アンシー博物館館長，68年サンジェルマン考古博物館館員となり，以後 17年間同博物館の副評議員をつとめた。 76年以後終生，人類学研究所の教授。この間 85年サンジェルマン市長，国会議員などもつとめた。主著『先史博物館』 Musée préhistorique (1881) ，『人類の先史時代』 Le préhistorique: antiquité de l'homme (83) 。
