His work, “A Study of Temple Sites in the Asuka Period,” published in 1941, was a labor of love that even touched on social structure based on the chronology of ancient roofing tiles. In 1955, he completed all 18 volumes of “Illustrated Catalog of the Treasures of the Shosoin,” a basic resource for research on the Shosoin Repository, and in 1957, he became director of the Nara National Museum, where he established a museum style centered on Buddhist art. …
