Within the tradition of Hermetic thought, the doctrine began with Hermes Trismegistus. According to the genealogy of the ancient theology believed in the Renaissance, Hermes Trismegistus was a contemporary of Moses, whose teachings were inherited by Orpheus, passed on to Pythagoras through Aglaophemus, and then passed on to Plato through his disciple Philolaus. The sayings of Hermes Trismegistus were believed to be the Corpus Hermeticum.
