A city in north-central Chile. It is located about 400 km south of Antofagasta and overlooks the Copiapo River. It is a fertile oasis area at the southern end of the Atacama Desert, where agriculture was already practiced during the Inca Empire. A settlement was established by the Spaniards in 1540, and it became an early base for exploration of the surrounding desert. In the first half of the 19th century, it prospered as a mining center after gold and silver mines were discovered nearby. In 1850-51, a railway was laid between the city and Caldera Port, located on the Pacific coast about 60 km west-northwest. It stagnated for a time from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, but it began to develop again with the development of copper deposits, and a smelter was built nearby. It is a transportation hub where the Trans-Chilean Railway and the Pan-American Highway pass, and a road that crosses the Andes and leads to Argentina branches off. Population 79,268 (1992 estimate).
