Greenshank - Greenshank

A bird of the family Scolopacidae in the order Charadriiformes. It breeds in northern Eurasia and migrates south in winter. It migrates to Japan as a migratory bird in spring and autumn. It is about 25 cm long and has a wingspan of about 19 cm. The upper side of the body is gray-brown with white upper tail and tail, the underside of the body is white and there is a brown spot on the chest. The beak is slightly long and slightly curved upwards, and the legs are long and blue-green. It lives on the coast, on tidal flats and inlets at the mouth of a river, in rice paddies and lotus fields, and feeds on animal matter. It sings with a "choo-choo" sound. The Sakhalin Greenshank T. guttifer breeds in Sakhalin and is one of the few migratory birds that migrate to Japan. It looks similar to the Japanese Greenshank, but its legs are short and yellowish, and its beak is straight and thick at the base.

鳥綱チドリ目シギ科の鳥。ユーラシアの北部で繁殖し、冬は南へ移動する。日本には旅鳥として春と秋に渡来する。全長約25センチメートル、翼長約19センチメートル。体の上面は灰褐色で上尾筒と尾は白く、体の下面は白くて胸に褐色の斑(はん)がある。嘴(くちばし)はやや長くてすこし上に反り、足は長くて青緑色。海岸や河口の干潟や入り江、水田やハス田にすみ、動物質の餌(えさ)をとる。チョーチョーと鳴く。カラフトアオアシシギT. guttiferは樺太(からふと)（サハリン）で繁殖し、日本には数少ない旅鳥として渡来する。アオアシシギに似ているが足は短くて黄色みが強く、嘴はまっすぐで基部が太い。
