...An acoustic analysis device developed during World War II, it is useful for analyzing sounds whose components change one after another in a short period of time, such as speech sounds (phonetics). It is officially called a sound spectrograph, or simply a spectrograph, and the diagram it produces is called a spectrogram, but it is often called the product name, sonagraph, and the diagram is called a sonagram. Figure 1 shows a sonagram of the vowel [a].
