This refers to the number of hydrogen atoms contained in one molecule of an acid that can become hydrogen ions in an aqueous solution. In a neutralization reaction, it indicates the degree of ability to neutralize the opposing base. Acids with a basicity of 1 (HCl, CH 3 -COOH, etc.) are monobasic acids, those with a basicity of 2 are dibasic acids (H 2 SO 4 , H 2 CO 3 , etc.), those with a basicity of 3 are tribasic acids (H 3 PO 4 , etc.), and those with a basicity of n are generally called n- basic acids.
