…In the Edo period, a paper hat called momoebari, with the front splayed and lacquered, was called a jinkasa and was used as a headgear for samurai in emergencies. In particular, a hat with a white lacquer finish on the front and gold leaf on the back was called a jinkasa with uragane, and was used by attendants who notified the shogun in the event of a fire. However, in 1863 (Bunkyu 3), in response to the uneasy social climate, samurai began to use jinkasa instead of the sedge-made one-character hats that had been used until then, and it was stipulated that daimyo and lower shodaifu should wear white-painted uragane, those who were clothed in black uragane, those who were indigo-colored uragane for those who were in attendance, and those below the attendance should wear black or rust-colored uragane on both sides. …

…江戸時代には百重張（ももえばり）といって紙製で，正面を吹きそらせて漆塗りとしたのを陣笠と呼んで，士分の非常の際のかぶり物とした。とくに表を白たたき塗りとして裏全部に金箔（きんぱく）をはったものを裏金の陣笠といって，火災のときに将軍に報知する近侍の料とした。しかし1863年(文久3)からは不穏な世相に対応して，一般武士の往来にもそれまでのスゲ(菅)製の一文字笠を廃して陣笠を用いるようになり，大名以下諸大夫までは白塗りの裏金で，布衣（ほい）までは黒塗りの裏金，御目見までは藍（あい）色の裏金，御目見以下陪臣は表裏ともに黒塗りまたは錆色塗りと規定された。…
