[Pre-excavation history]
The excavation of Kamishazuka (Kamizamuraizuka Tomb) and Shimoshazuka (Shimozamuraizuka Tomb) in Nasu District, Shimotsuke Province (present-day Nasu District, Tochigi Prefecture) by Tokugawa Mitsukuni in 1692 (Genroku 5) is often cited as the first excavation survey in Japan. Inspired by a report (1687) of the Nasu kuni no miyatsuko monument discovered nearby, Mitsukuni regarded both tombs as those of Nasu kuni no miyatsuko, and ordered his retainers to excavate both tombs with the aim of confirming their names by discovering the epitaphs.
