Gitoxin

C 41 H 64 O 14 (780.94). A secondary glycoside extracted from the leaves of Digitalis purpurea L. and D.lanata Ehrh. of the Scrophulariaceae family. Hydrolysis with acid gives 1 mol of gitoxigenin and 3 mol of digitoxose. Colorless hard columnar crystals (chloroform-methanol mixture). Decomposition point 285 °C. +3.5° (pyridine). Insoluble in chloroform and acetone, soluble in pyridine. Cardiotonic. LD 50 0.49 mg/kg (cats). [CAS 4562-36-1]
