…He became independent as a poet in 1925, but during the Nazi regime he only published non-political radio plays. After serving in the army and being a prisoner of war, he returned to Germany and became head of drama at the East Berlin Radio. In 1949 he became editor-in-chief of the leading East German literary magazine, Sinn und Form, and won the State Prize for his Anthology of Poems (1948). However, his broad-minded editorial policy and commentary were criticized as a "non-Marxist bourgeois eclectic ideology," and he resigned in 1962. …
