Spanish politician and lawyer. Born in Catalonia. Elected to the Spanish Parliament three times since 1921, he also worked to defend workers in prison. In 1931, he founded the Catalan left-wing party Esquerra Catalana, and the following year became head of the Catalan autonomous government. In October 1934, he declared independence for the Catalan nation, but failed. He was prosecuted and sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was released after the general election in February 1936, and served as head of the autonomous government again until the Catalan region was occupied by the National Front during the civil war (1937).

スペインの政治家，弁護士。カタルニャ地方出身。1921年以降，3度にわたりスペイン国会議員に選出され，同時に，獄中にある労働者の弁護活動に従事した。31年〈カタルニャ左派党Esquerra Catalana〉を創立，翌年カタルニャ自治政府の首長に就任し，34年10月に〈カタルニャ国家〉の独立を宣言したが失敗し，起訴されて懲役30年を宣告された。36年2月の総選挙後釈放され，内戦中カタルニャ地方が国民戦線によって占領(1937)されるまで，再び自治政府の首長を務めた。
