Aomishima - Aomishima (English spelling) bluespotted stargazer

Japanese: アオミシマ - あおみしま(英語表記)bluespotted stargazer
Aomishima - Aomishima (English spelling) bluespotted stargazer
A marine fish of the family Mishimastomidae (illustration) in the order Perciformes. It is known by names such as Amambō, Saganbō, and Shaganbō in various parts of Toyama, Mishima-ankō in Shimonoseki, and Mushima in Kochi. Its body is long and cylindrical with very small scales, and it has one dorsal fin consisting only of soft rays. As its name suggests, its back and sides are blue-green with small brown spots. It can reach a total length of 40 cm. It is commonly seen throughout Japan, living on sandy and muddy bottoms along the coast, often half-buried in the sand and mud. Its head is flat with eyes facing upwards, and its mouth is also large and facing upwards. It is said that it waits for small fish or crustaceans to approach while buried in this position, and then catches and eats them.
