[Born] 752. Athens [Died] August 9, 803. Byzantine Emperor of Lesbos (reigned 797-802). Last emperor of the Isaurian dynasty. A supporter of icon worship, she became the wife of Leo IV (768). After her husband's death, her son Constantine VI (aged 10) ascended to the throne (780), and she herself became regent. In 787, she held the Seventh Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, where she once again officially recognized icon worship. For this, she was canonized by the Eastern Orthodox Church (feast day of Saint Irene, August 9). Unhappy with her regency, she took advantage of a conspiracy by her son to capture him, gouged out both of his eyes, and overthrew him. In 797, she became the first female emperor of the Byzantine Empire. During her reign, the state treasury was heavily burdened by tributes to Islam and Bulgaria, donations to churches and monasteries, and the abolition of the capital's inhabitant tax. In 802, he was removed from his post due to a court intrigue and exiled to the island of Lesbos, where he died.
