Kumagaya [city] - Kumagaya

Japanese: 熊谷[市] - くまがや
Kumagaya [city] - Kumagaya
A city in northern Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1933. It occupies the alluvial lowlands on the south bank of the Tone River and both banks of the Arakawa River, and its northern end borders Gunma Prefecture. In the early modern period, the city center flourished as a post town on the Nakasendo (current Route 17), a market town, and a junction on the Chichibu Kaido (Route 140). The Kumagaya Prefectural Office was established in the early Meiji period, and it developed as the center of the surrounding silk-reeling industry. The Joetsu Shinkansen, Takasaki Line, and Chichibu Railway run through the city. Since around 1960, large factories have been moving in, and industries such as steel, cement, and metals are thriving. In the rural areas, rice and wheat are produced, and greenhouse gardening is also practiced. In the Middle Ages, it was the property of Kumagai Naozane, and Kumagai (Yukokuji) Temple stands on the site of his mansion in the northern part of the city. In October 2005, Menumacho and Osatocho of Osato District were incorporated, and in February 2007, Konancho of Osato District was incorporated. 159.82km2 . 203,180 people (2010).
