Before industrialization, craftsmen in France organized guilds for the purpose of training their crafts by occupation, securing jobs, mutual assistance, and cultivating their religious spirit. According to legend, its origins date back to biblical times, when an organization was formed when King Solomon built the temple in Jerusalem. It is believed that it was formed in the second half of the Middle Ages, especially at the end of the period, as a self-defense organization by craftsmen who moved from town to town in search of work, to counter the increasingly closed trade guilds, which were organizations of master craftsmen.

産業化以前のフランスの手工業職人たちが職種ごとに集まり，技能訓練，仕事の保障，相互扶助，求道心の練磨などを目的に組織した同職種の職人組合。伝説によれば，その起源は聖書時代にまでさかのぼり，ソロモン王がエルサレムに神殿を築いた時の組織が起りだという。実際に確認されるのは中世後半，特に末期からで，徐々に閉鎖的になった親方たちの団体である同業組合に対抗し，間欠的な失業に対処するために，職を求めて町から町へと移動していた職人たちが，自己防衛の組織として形成したものと思われる。
