Kenji Kondo

Anarchist. Born in Hyogo Prefecture. In 1912 (Meiji 45), he entered the Department of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University. He was impressed by Osugi Sakae's "The Struggle for Life" that he read while he was a student, and visited Osugi. This led him to frequent the study group (later the Kitafu-kai) led by anarchist Watanabe Masataro. After graduating from Waseda, he worked for the Tokyo Mainichi Newspaper Company and Sakai Toshihiko's Baibunsha. In 1916 (Taisho 8), he became a member of Osugi and others' first "Labor Movement," and in 1920, he participated in the founding of the Japan Socialist League and edited its organ newspaper, "Socialism." After Osugi's death, he worked hard to edit and publish the 10-volume "Complete Works of Osugi Sakae" (1926). When the conflict between Ana-Bol intensified, he took the side of anarchism and was active in supporting disputes and giving lectures. In 1926, he participated in the founding of the Black Youth League, but later withdrew due to his opposition to the violent tendencies of the "Pure Anarchism" faction. He also supported the Japan Trade Union Freedom Association faction. After World War II, he founded the Japan Anarchist League in 1946 (Showa 21) and became its secretary-general. His wife was Sakai Toshihiko's eldest daughter, the feminist Kondo Magara (1903-1983).
