An annelid of the Polychaeta family, Polytrichum commune (illustration). It is so named because it has long, upright setae like those of a caterpillar. It is widely distributed from central Honshu southwards. Its body is spindle-shaped and about 7-8 cm long, but some can reach 15 cm. It has 30-40 ring segments, and on the back of each segment there is a row of oval purple spots along the midline, and on both sides of the spots there are densely branched, leaf-like gills. The head is small and has five purple-brown tentacles, one pair of accessory tentacles, and two pairs of eyes. On both sides of each segment there are dorsal and ventral setal bundles.

多毛綱ウミケムシ科の環形動物（イラスト）。毛虫のように長い剛毛をさかだてることからこの名がある。本州中部以南に広く分布する。体は紡錘形で，長さ7～8cmくらいであるが，15cmになるものもある。環節は30～40あり，各節の背面には正中線上に楕円形の紫色の斑紋が1列に並び，斑紋の両側には密に枝分れした木の葉状のえらがある。頭部は小さく，紫褐色の5本の感触手，1対の副感触手，2対の眼などがある。各節の両側には背剛毛束と腹剛毛束とがある。
