A phosphide with the chemical composition (Fe,Ni) 3 P, it is a mineral commonly found in iron meteorites. It has a tetragonal crystal system. It is an opaque mineral with a metallic luster, and is silvery white in color. Its Mohs hardness is 6.5-7, but it is brittle. Its specific gravity is 7.0-7.8. In addition to iron meteorites, it is found in meteorites formed in reducing environments, such as stony-iron meteorites and stony meteorites containing enstatite, certain types of lunar rocks, and on Earth in spontaneous combustion products from coal mountains. Those in iron meteorites may contain small amounts of cobalt. [Takeda Hiroshi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
