Liquid immiscibility

The separation of a homogeneous liquid into two or more immiscible liquid fractions. The liquid immiscibility observed in melting experiments was not compositionally consistent with that occurring in natural igneous rocks, and it was doubtful whether liquid immiscibility could occur within the compositional range of magmas. Fenner revived the theory and considered immiscibility in magmas to be thermodynamically possible [Greig: 1928, Fenner: 1948, Mason: 1958]. Since Roeder's consideration of immiscibility in 1951 and his active assertion of liquid immiscibility based on experiments with carbonate-silicate systems, petrologists have come to accept it for natural rocks as well [Roedder: 1951, 1979]. Among the various processes of magma differentiation, liquid immiscibility is considered to be the only process by which all-liquid magmas are directly formed.
