Holy Spirit - Seirei (English spelling)

The third person in the Christian trinity. It is believed that the three are of the same essence as God the Father and God the Son, and form one body. In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for "Spirit" is "ruah," which originally meant the "breath" or "wind" of God, and is considered the life principle of humans. In the New Testament, it is the Greek word "pneuma," and the Spirit is the power of God itself, and the power to evoke supernatural illusions, as often seen in apocalyptic literature, is also counted as an action of the Spirit. The gospel writers portray Jesus as a man filled with the Spirit of God, and recognize in Jesus the amazing spiritual power to instantly heal those possessed by demons. It is clear from the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistles of Paul that the "spirit man" had a special meaning in the early Christian church.

キリスト教における三位(さんみ)一体論の第三位格。父なる神、子なる神と本質を同じくし、三者で一体を形成すると信じられている。『旧約聖書』では「霊」にあたるヘブライ語は「ルーアハ」ruah.であるが、これは本来神の「息」あるいは「風」を意味し、人間の生命原理とみなされている。『新約聖書』ではギリシア語の「プネウマ」がそれにあたるが、霊は神の力そのものであり、しばしば黙示文学にみられるような超自然的幻想を呼び起こす力も、霊の作用に数えられる。福音書(ふくいんしょ)記者たちは、イエスを神の霊に満たされた人として表現し、イエスのなかに、悪霊に憑(つ)かれた者をたちどころに癒(いや)す驚異的な霊力を認めている。「霊の人」が原始キリスト教会において特別な意味を担っていたことは、「使徒行伝(ぎょうでん)」や「パウロの手紙」を通して明らかである。
