317‐361 Roman Emperor. Reigned 324-337 as co-emperor and 337-361 as co-emperor. Third son of Constantine I. After his father's death, he killed many of his family members and then ruled with his three brothers. He established a military system and attacked Persia. After the death of his brothers, he temporarily appointed Gallus as co-emperor, but he was soon executed and Julian was given control of Gaul. The two men eventually fell out of sympathy, and Julian was proclaimed co-emperor in Paris. Constantius, who tried to defeat him, died suddenly. He was passionate about Christian theological debates, and tried to mediate between the Arians and Catholics, but failed, and exiled Athanasius.
