A regional brand of Saitama Prefecture in the Kanto region. These dolls are produced in Iwatsuki Ward, Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture, using a manufacturing method originating from Iwatsuki. It all began in 1697 (Genroku 10) during the Edo period, when a Buddhist sculptor from Kyoto stayed in Iwatsuki on his way back from repairing Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and created paulownia wood dolls from paulownia powder. There are festival dolls such as Hina dolls and May dolls, and ukiyo-e dolls based on Noh and Kabuki performances. The head, hands, feet, costumes, props, etc. are all made by different people. A traditional handicraft of Saitama Prefecture. In March 2007 (Heisei 19), it was designated a national traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. In February 2007 (Heisei 19), it was registered as a regional collective trademark with the Japan Patent Office. The trademark registration number is 5028377.
