Alundum - Alundum (English spelling)

This is the product name of an artificial corundum abrasive made by Norton, an American company. In Japan, this name has been used for a long time, and is therefore used as a general name for alumina particles. There are fused alumina made by melting bauxite and coke in an electric furnace, and sintered alumina made by molding alumina powder with a binder and then firing it. Sintered alumina is slightly less hard than fused alumina. It is used in large quantities as a grinding stone and abrasive cloth material. It is also used as a raw material for refractory products such as crucibles.

アメリカのノートン社製の人造コランダム研磨材の商品名。日本ではこの名が古くから使用されていたため、アルミナ質粒子をさす一般名のように使われている。ボーキサイトをコークスと電気炉内で溶融してつくる溶融アルミナや、アルミナ粉末を粘結剤で成形したのち焼成した焼結アルミナなどがある。硬度は焼結アルミナのほうが溶融アルミナよりやや低い。砥石(といし)、研磨布材として多量に使用される。また、るつぼなど耐火物原料としても使用される。
