Tsukigata [Village] - Tsukigata

Japanese: 月潟[村] - つきがた

A village in Nishikanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 3,954 (1995). Located in the center of the Echigo Plain, on the west bank of the Nakanokuchi River, a branch of the Shinano River. The entire area is alluvial plain, and settlements have developed on the natural levees. In Tsukigata, the central settlement, a blacksmithing industry that began as a subcontractor for a hardware wholesaler in Sanjo in the early modern period is thriving, and the area is known as a major producer of Echigo sickles, but most of the businesses are small-scale. Located in the center of the Kambara grain belt, the area has one of the highest rice yields per tan in the prefecture. Pear cultivation has been popular on the natural levees since ancient times, and a 170-year-old pear tree in Oobetsuto is an old variety from when pear cultivation was introduced, and is designated a natural monument.

新潟県中部，西蒲原郡の村。人口3954(1995)。越後平野中央部，信濃川派川の中ノ口川西岸にあり，全域が沖積地で，自然堤防上に集落が発達する。中心集落の月潟では，近世三条の金物問屋の下請けとして始められた鍛冶工業が盛んで，越後鎌の主産地として知られるが，零細規模のものがほとんどである。蒲原穀倉地帯の中心にあり，米の反当り収量は県内有数である。自然堤防上では古くからナシの栽培が盛んで，大別当（おおべつとう）にある樹齢170年と伝えられる類産ナシは，ナシ栽培が導入された当時の古品種で，天然記念物に指定されている。
