Stirling engine

An external combustion engine in which gas in a cylinder is heated from the outside, and the work of gas expansion is converted into mechanical work by a piston. It was patented by R. Stirling of Scotland in 1816. It has features such as the ability to use a variety of fuels, low noise and vibration, and easy exhaust gas purification. Development is underway in Japan, the United States, Sweden, and other countries, but it has not yet been put to practical use.

シリンダー中のガスを外部から加熱して，ガスの膨張仕事をピストンによって機械仕事に変換する外燃機関。1816年スコットランドのR.スターリングが特許を取得。多種の燃料が使え，低騒音・低振動，排気ガスの清浄化が容易などの特長をもつ。日本をはじめ米国，スウェーデンなどで開発が進められているが，実用化には至っていない。
