A village in Agawa County in north-central Kochi Prefecture. Population 3,371 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Niyodo River, it borders Ehime Prefecture to the west. It is in the Shikoku Mountains, with the Niyodo River flowing east at the southern end of the town and the Doi River joining it from the north. Most of the town is covered by forests, and forestry and field farming are the main industries. In the past, cultivation of Mitsumata and paper mulberry, which are used to make paper, was popular. Currently, sericulture and tea cultivation are underway, as well as the development of forest resources, but there is a significant outflow of labor due to migrant workers. 高知県中北部,吾川郡の村。人口3371(1995)。仁淀川上流域に位置し,西は愛媛県に接する。四国山地の中にあって,南端を仁淀川が東流し,北から土居川が合流する。大部分は山林で占められ,林業と畑作農業が中心。かつては製紙原料となるミツマタ,コウゾの栽培が盛んであった。現在は養蚕や茶の栽培のほか,山林資源の開発が進められているが,出稼ぎによる労働力の流出が著しい。仁淀川沿いに国道33号線が走る。【萩原 毅】
