...They scrape off food with their radula and jaw plates as they crawl, but they also like to eat young vegetable shoots and mushrooms, causing damage to agriculture. There are also carnivorous species, such as the American giant oyster snail and the African giant oyster snail, which eat the eggs and young shellfish of the African snail (illustration), and are used as natural enemies to exterminate them. There are about 11,000 known species around the world, with about 700 species found in Japan.
