The body is an upright branching filament, or a pseudoparenchymal disk of cells arranged radially and densely on a flat surface, both of which grow in ponds and marshes. Reproduction is by eggs and sperm. Oviparous organelles are formed on the sides of the branches, and their tips grow long to become fertilization hairs that help capture sperm. When fertilized, cell filaments extend from the cells near the egg and completely surround the fertilized egg. This part is specifically called the spermocarp. When the fertilized egg matures, it undergoes meiosis to become usually 4 to 8 zoospores. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
