In the case of a bill, it is an endorsement made after the creation of a protest or after the deadline for its creation has elapsed (Article 20, Paragraph 1, proviso, and Article 77, Paragraph 1, Item 1, of the Bills of Exchange Act), and in the case of a check, it is an endorsement made after the creation of a protest or a declaration with the same effect, or after the deadline for presentment has elapsed (Article 24, Paragraph 1, of the Checks Act). It is also called a post-endorsement or post-period endorsement. Since this endorsement does not need to protect circulation like a normal endorsement, it has a transferable effect, but only the effect of assigning a named claim. Therefore, severance of personal defenses and bona fide acquisition (→ immediate acquisition) are not permitted, and it has no security effect.

手形では，支払拒絶証書作成後または作成期間経過後になされた裏書のことであり (手形法 20条1項但書，77条1項1号) ，小切手では，支払拒絶証書もしくはこれと同一の効力を有する宣言の作成後の裏書または呈示期間経過後になされた裏書 (小切手法 24条1項) のこと。後裏書，期間後裏書ともいう。この裏書は通常の裏書のように流通を保護する必要はないので，移転的効力はあるが，指名債権譲渡の効力しかない。したがって人的抗弁の切断や善意取得 (→即時取得 ) は認められず，また担保的効力もない。
