… Naval officers used several different types of uniforms following the example of Western Europe. The formal uniform consisted of a crescent-shaped formal cap, a tailcoat with a standing collar and gold epaulets, a sword belt with gold and distinguishing lines, and a long sword. It was established in 1873, and with minor revisions, it was worn until 1938 when visiting the Imperial Palace, on national holidays, and for important events such as funerals and celebrations at home. Evening dress, which was rarely worn, was abolished in 1893. …
