Hot springs have always been regarded as mysterious by the Chinese, as seen in the Baopuzi, which uses the hot springs of Wen Gu as a metaphor for something beyond human common sense. Wen Gu is the Wenyuan Gu or Hot Spring Gu that appears in the Shan Hai Jing, and is said to be the place where the sun rises.
