Abbreviation of arare mochi (rice cake with rice crackers). Finely cut mochi is thoroughly dried, roasted or deep-fried to make it puffed up, and seasoned with soy sauce. There are varieties such as shinagawamaki, which is wrapped in nori seaweed, and kakinotane, which is seasoned with chili pepper. There are also varieties such as hoshi arare, which is made by drying and roasting rice grains, and hina arare, which is made by sprinkling sugar on rice grains.

Hail (graupel)

A type of precipitation, small pellets 2 to 5 mm in diameter. Snow hail is snow with a small amount of supercooled water droplets attached. It usually falls before or after snowfall in winter when the temperature is near 0°C, and is white and soft. Ice hail is small, hard ice particles. It falls from cumulonimbus clouds when the temperature is above 0°C.

降水の一種で,直径2〜5mmの小球。雪あられは雪に少量の過冷却水滴がついたもので,冬に気温が0℃近くのとき,多くは降雪の前後に降り,色は白く,柔らかい。氷あられは堅い氷の粒でひょう(雹)の小粒のもの。気温が0℃より高いとき積乱雲から降ってくる。
