...The eruption of Mt. Pelee in Martinique, West Indies, in 1902, which killed 28,000 people, was the first time that the phenomenon of pyroclastic flows was widely recognized in volcanology. The term "nuée ardente" was first proposed by French volcanologist François Antoine Alfred Lacroix (1863-1948), who studied this eruption (1904), but since many different types of pyroclastic flows have been discovered, the term "nuée ardente" has come to be limited to small-scale pyroclastic flows of the Pelee type. They are characterized by being composed of dense, solid rock blocks with low vesiculation, and the volume of ejecta is usually less than 0.1 km3 , and the distance traveled is less than 10 km. ...
