Goryoe - Goryoe

Japanese: 御霊会 - ごりょうえ
Goryoe - Goryoe
〘Noun〙① A festival held since the Heian period to appease the vengeful spirits of the dead, fearing that they would be cursed. The oldest documented instance is from 863, the 5th year of the Jogan era, and it became popular thereafter. *Sandai Jitsuroku - May 20th, 863, "At Shinsen- en , a Goryoe ceremony was held"② A Goryoe ceremony held on the 14th day of the 6th month of the lunar calendar at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto (formerly called Gion Shrine), to worship the Gion god ( Susanoo ), who is in charge of warding off epidemics and disasters. Gion Goryoe. Gion Festival. Gion Eat. ※Makura (end of the 10th century) 80 "Uzujo no Kotobuki, Kagura no Hitocho (abbreviated) Goryauen no Umanocho (Osa) " [Etymology] ① is the first recorded Goryoe ceremony as an official festival, and it is said that after worshiping the spirits of the six places and reading the Golden Light Sutra and Heart Sutra, Bugaku, Acrobatics, and Sangaku were performed. ② Gion Goryoe and Kitano Goryoe are particularly famous. The "spirits" who died untimely deaths are thought to bring about disasters such as epidemics, insect damage, and famine, and since this is a festival to appease them, it is often held in the summer months of the fifth and sixth lunar months due to its connection with epidemic times, but there were also occasional Goryoe festivals.
