A two-act opera (K620) composed by Mozart in 1791. The libretto was written by impresario, writer and actor Johann Emmanuel Schikaneder (1751-1812). It is a fantastical fairy-tale set in ancient Egypt, but at its core it shows the moral values of the Freemasons, an ideological society to which Mozart himself belonged along with Schikaneder. Tamino, a foreign prince who gets lost in the forest, is rescued by three maids who serve the Queen of the Night, who give him a portrait of the Queen's daughter, Pamina. Tamino falls in love with Pamina at first sight, and sets out with the birdcatcher Papageno to rescue her, who has been captured by the monk Sarastro. When Tamino arrives at Sarastro's temple, he learns that the monk is not a bad man, and undergoes a test to be united with Pamina. Having successfully overcome their ordeals, the two praise God together with Papageno and others, who have met his lovely wife, Papagena. This work should be called a Singspiel (sung play) rather than an opera, as it uses dialogue instead of a recital to connect the music, and is often criticized for its confusing plot, but its symbolic content and rich, beautiful music make it a worthy masterpiece that heralded the beginning of modern German opera. It premiered in Vienna on September 30th of the same year it was composed, with Mozart himself conducting the opening and second nights. Its Japanese premiere was in 1953 (Showa 28) by the Gurlitt Opera Society. [Yukio Miyake] "A.
