The capital of Colima State in southwestern Mexico. It is located about 170 km south-southwest of Guadalajara, in a basin in the mountains that form the southern extension of the Madre San Gorgonio Occidental, overlooking the Colima River, a tributary of the Almeria River. It is about 470 m above sea level. It is an old town founded in 1522, but due to its location in a very poorly accessible area, it did not play an important role in Mexican history. It is currently connected by rail and road to the capital and other inland cities, as well as to Manzanillo, a port on the Pacific coast. It is the center of the surrounding agricultural region, and is a place where cotton, rice, corn, etc. are distributed and processed, and there are industries such as salt refining, distilled liquor, shoemaking, and leather. It is the location of the University of Colima (1867). Population: 116,155 (estimated 1990).
