A Joruri composer in the mid-Edo period. His real name was Matsuda Kazuyoshi. His first work is said to be "Kawachi no Kuni Ubagai" (signed with his real name alone, 1713?). His works "Hotoke Gozen Ougi Ikusa" (15) and "Ootonomiya Asahi no Yoroi" (23, co-written with Takeda Izumo) were corrected by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, so it is thought that he studied under Chikamatsu at the Takemotoza. He did not produce any works until Kyoho 15 (1730), but published works almost every year thereafter until Kanpo 1 (1741), and he was called one of the four great composers along with Ki Kaito, Takeda Izumo, and Namiki Sosuke. Most of his twenty-odd pieces are co-written, and many of them are historical pieces. His representative works include "Kiichi Hogen Sanryaku no Maki" (31), "The Chronicles of the Dannoura Kabuto War" (32), "The Night Attack at Gosho Sakura Horikawa" (37), "The Story of the Rise and Fall of Hirakana" (39), and "The New Usuyuki Monogatari" (41).

江戸時代中期の浄瑠璃作者。本名松田和吉。処女作は『河内国姥火 (うばがひ) 』 (本名単独で署名。 1713?) といわれる。『仏御前扇軍 (ほとけごぜんおうぎいくさ) 』 (15) や『大塔宮曦鎧 (おおとうのみやあさひのよろい) 』 (23，竹田出雲と合作) では近松門左衛門の添削を受けていることから，竹本座で近松に師事したと考えられる。以後享保 15 (30) 年まで作品がなく，それ以後は寛保1 (41) 年までほぼ毎年発表し，紀海音，竹田出雲，並木宗輔とともに作者四天王と称せられた。二十数編のうちのほとんどが合作によるもので，時代物が多い。代表作『鬼一法眼三略巻 (きいちほうげんさんりゃくのまき) 』 (31) ，『壇浦兜軍記』 (32) ，『御所桜堀川夜討』 (37) ，『ひらかな盛衰記』 (39) ，『新うすゆき物語』 (41) 。
