〘Noun〙 River improvement work. A general term for the restoration of river dikes (=levees ) that have collapsed due to floods or other disasters, removal of sediment and sand, and repair of waterways. In the Edo period, a distinction was made between "self-construction," in which the construction costs were borne by the relevant villages, and "public construction," which was carried out with public funds. *Political talk (around 1727) 1 "All matters related to river construction can be decided by the head of the village."
