The largest epic poem written in Old English. It consists of 3,182 alliterative lines. It is a fusion of historical events that occurred in Denmark in the early 6th century and Norse legends. It was brought to England by Danish invaders in the mid-6th century, and Christian elements were added. It was written in the Northumbrian dialect by a poet (probably a Danish clergyman living in England) around the 8th century. The only surviving manuscript dates to around 1000. The first part tells the story of the young hero Beowulf's slaying of the cannibal Grendel, who ravages the Danish palace. The second part tells the story of the elderly Beowulf, who has been king for 50 years, slaying the dragon that ravages the country and losing his own life.
