The second largest lake on the island of Ireland (and the largest in the Republic of Ireland), located in the west of the Republic of Ireland, mostly in County Galway. Its area is 170 km2 . The short River Corrib flows south from the lake, passing through Galway City and emptying into Galway Bay. In the mid-19th century, the Eglinton Canal was completed between the lake and Galway City, improving water transport. It is a popular recreational spot for trout fishing and boating.
