Titonia - Chitonia (English spelling)

Japanese: チトニア - ちとにあ（英語表記）titonia

There are about 10 species of tall annual plants of the Asteraceae family found in Mexico and Central America. The ornamental Tithonia is one of them, the Mexican sunflower ( T. rotundifolia Blake). This wild species grows to a height of over 2m, but the cultivated species, Torch, has an upright stem and grows to a height of about 1m. It has broad ovate leaves, blooms early, and in summer, it branches roughly and produces solitary scarlet-orange sunflower-like flowers at the ends of the branches.

メキシコから中央アメリカにかけて約10種ある丈の高いキク科の一年草。観賞用に利用されるチトニアは，それらのうちのメキシコヒマワリ(ヒロハヒマワリ)T.rotundifolia Blake(英名Mexican sunflower)である。この野生系統は高さ2mをこえるが，栽培されるのはその改良種トーチTorchで，茎は直立し，高さ1mほど。葉は広卵形，早咲きで，夏には粗く分枝して緋橙色のヒマワリに似た花を枝端に単生する。
