A type of hydrolase. A general term for enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of organic phosphate esters and organic and inorganic polyphosphates. Enzymes that hydrolyze esters include alkaline phosphatase and phosphodiesterase, while enzymes that hydrolyze acid anhydrides include adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and adenyl pyrophosphatase.
