A Jewish rabbi in the era of mercantilism. He was originally a Marrano (a Jew from the Iberian Peninsula who converted to Christianity) but emigrated to Amsterdam as a boy. He used his extensive theological knowledge to explain Judaism to ordinary Europeans, and from a utilitarian standpoint, he argued that Jews bring benefits to the countries in which they resided. He negotiated with O. Cromwell for permission to return to England, where the Jews had been expelled at the end of the 13th century. [Ishida Tomoo]
